The Vampire Diaries: By L.J SMITH

The Awakening

Picture
Elena Gilbert is the most beautiful and popular girl in Robert E. Lee High School. Adamant to triumph over personal tragedy - her parents' death in a car crash - Elena enters into her senior year of high school with the ferocious desire to be best at everything. The moment she spots the handsome new exchange student, Stefan Salvatore, Elena is determined to make him hers. However, for seemingly no reason at all, Stefan avoids Elena like the plague.

And then Stefan rescues Elena from a brutal admirer. Elena realises that Stefan may reciprocate her obsessive affection. But as the pair fall in love, their town of Fell's Church is being terrorised by inexplicable, horrifying 'animal attacks'. Too soon, Elena and Stefan's love faces a great peril: everyone thinks Stefan committed the crimes.

When Elena tries to confront Stefan, she discovers his terrible secret. Stefan is a five-hundred year old vampire, born in the Italian Renaissance. But Stefan isn't the one who has been committing the murders, the perpetrator is Stefan's diabolical brother, Damon Salvatore, who lives to wreak misery on Stefan's life. The two brothers were turned vampire by the coquettish German Lady Katherine von Swartzchild, whom they both loved. Katherine killed herself when the brothers refused to make peace with each other. The reason why Stefan initially avoided Elena was because Elena is a doppelganger of Katherine. For this same reason, Damon also chooses to pursue Elena.

Damon's methods of seduction are creepily romantic. He follows her around in the magical disguise of a crow and he invades her dreams. Despite the duress, Elena rejects Damon's advances and remains stoically loyal to Stefan.

Elena's rejection angers Damon. In a fit of rage, he provokes Stefan to fight.

In the aftermath, Stefan disappears. The townspeople of Fell's Church belive Stefan's disappearance cements the truth that Stefan is behind the attacks. However, Elena's sure she knows what's really happened. She thinks Damon is responsible for Stefan's disappearance, and she knows Stefan is in grave danger...

The Struggle

Picture
Picking up where The Awakening left off, Elena confronts Damon about Stefan's disappearance. But when Elena stands firm on her rejection of Damon's romantic advances, Damon refuses to help find Stefan. Elena must turn to her best friends, Bonnie McCullough and Meredith Sulez. Bonnie, who is a witch, uses magic to track down Stefan. The girls discover Stefan trapped in the bottom of a well, close to death. After Stefan's rescue, Elena offers him her blood to recover.

While Stefan's ordeal counters the town's belief that he perpetrated the horrific 'animal' attacks, Stefan still faces hostility in the town. And as the town's monumental anniversary,'Founder's Day' approaches, Elena reaches her breaking point.

Elena's adversary, Caroline Forbes, has stolen Elena's diary. Elena confesses all her secrets to her diary, and its contents can be read as evidence that Stefan is a violent criminal. Worried about Stefan's mental well-being, Elena enlists the help of her friends to retrieve the diary. Bonnie, Meredith and Elena try to break into Caroline's house to find the diary to no success, and Caroline's family comes home too soon. In a mad attempt to escape, Elena gets isolated from the two other girls. She discovers Damon lurking in the shadows of the Forbes house. Damon offers to help Elena's cause - if Elena gives him blood in return. Elena refuses.

Later, Damon manages to get invited into Elena's home by Elena's Aunt and Uncle. Lucky for Elena, her home consists of two separate houses, and her room is in a separate part of the house. But when Damon gives her a terrifying ultimatum, choosing between Damon bleeding Elena, or her baby sister, Margaret, Elena sacrifices herself. Damon compels Elena into a blood exchange.

Soon after, Elena tells Stefan about the diaries. Stefan tells Elena that even if Caroline reveals the contents of Elena's diary to the whole town, because of his love for Elena, Stefan will stay and fight for his innocence. Stefan then proposes to Elena, and they exchange blood.

On Founder's Day, Elena and her friends try their best to steal Elena's diary, but their attempts are futile. However, when Caroline tries to read the diary, it is discovered that the diaries have been switched - Caroline's reading her own diary. Damon had stolen back Elena's.

Damon smugly accepts Elena's thanks, but his satisfaction quickly turns to anger when he hears about Elena's engagement. Elena's Aunt and Uncle are also less than thrilled. Frustrated by their reactions, Elena storms off, borrowing her friend's car.

Elena angrily drives to Stefan's residence. But when she finally gets there, Stefan isn't home, and there is something peculiar going on with the weather. Elena thinks Damon's Powers may be responsible. But there's something malevolent about the weather. It is vicious and brutal, and it wants Elena dead...

The Fury

Picture
This book begins with the newly "turned" Elena watching Damon and Stefan engaged in a fight to the death. Initially she does not recognize the brothers due to her confused state, having recently died and risen as a Vampire, but soon a flicker of memory causes her to realize the one she loves is hurt and needs her help.

The reader is led to believe she is referring to Stefan, whom she has had a passionate relationship with throughout the first two volumes, but instead Elena attacks him, and fully intends to kill him for hurting Damon. Stefan, upon recognizing Elena, doesn't fight back and allows her to clumsily and savagely bite him. Damon eventually commands her to stop and takes her in search of human blood. Stefan intervenes, worried about the attention more dead bodies may bring, however he realises that Elena must drink human blood in order to complete her transformation into a vampire, otherwise she will die.. Stefan explains to Matt what has happened to Elena and convinces him to let her feed from him so she will complete the transition.

Afterwards Damon hides her in Alaric Saltzman's attic and once she has rested, her disorientation begins to lift. Elena is deeply upset about the way she attacked Stefan and sneaks out of Alaric's house, overhearing a conversation on her way which indicates the new history teacher is more than he appears. While wandering, trying to process all the new information, Elena stumbles upon her own memorial service. The great distress she feels watching this draws both Stefan and Damon to her. Stefan is relieved when Elena remembers their love and Damon is enraged, but the three are distracted by the strange behaviour of a large pack of the towns pet dogs. The dogs are all sitting, as if waiting for a command, until the owner of one of the dogs tries to approach her, the pack suddenly turns on him and he is only saved by Stefan's intervention.

More strange events lead the three vampires, with the help of Bonnie, Meredith, Matt and Alaric, to conclude that the same Power which forced Elena off of the bridge is still stalking the town and is targeting specifically Elena's loved ones. It transpires that Katherine, the vampire who turned Damon and Stefan, faked her own death some 500 years before in a vain attempt to bring the brothers closer so they could be her eternal companions. Her plan failed, and the brothers, hating one another more than ever, killed each other and, as they had both ingested Katherine's blood, they rose as Vampires. Katherine was infuriated by the brother's continuing feud, so she fled to Klaus, the one who had turned her into a vampire on her death bed. Under his teaching, Katherine became more powerful and quite unstable. In the end Elena has forgotten about the hate she had for Damon and she finds he's not evil, he's special.

She learns that Stefan has fallen in love with Elena. Out of jealousy she plots an elaborate revenge, beginning with the systematic torture of Stefan. She eventually has Damon, Stefan and Elena tied up in an underground crypt where she plans to torture and dispose of them all. As Katherine debates the most preferable order and method of their deaths, Elena manages to free herself, forcing Katherine into a shaft of sunlight and tearing off her protective lapiz lazuli necklace. Elena holds Katherine there until the older vampire disintegrates and is badly burned herself as Katherine had already removed the protective ring from Elena's hand. Stefan pulls Elena back into the shadows but it is too late, Elena dies in Stefan's arms after she made him promise to take care of Damon. The book ends with a diary entry from Bonnie, who admits that Elena was neither perfect nor a saint, but she made the ultimate sacrifice to save the town.

The Dark Reunion

Picture
When Elena sacrificed herself to save the two vampire brothers who love her — the handsome, brooding Stefan and the sleek and dangerous Damon, she was consigned to a fate beyond death until a powerful supernatural force pulled her back. Now Elena is not just human. She has powers and gifts that were bestowed on her in the afterlife. What's more, her blood pulses with an overwhelming and unique force that makes her blood irresistable to any vampire. Stefan wants to find a way to keep Elena safe so that they can make a life together. But Fell's Church is in danger again. Two magical fox spirits named Shinichi and Misao have been drawn to the town. These two creatures, called "Kitsune" manage to control Damon, using "Malach" which take control of his body. Under their influence, Stefan is lured away from Fell's Church with promises of mortality again. He leaves a note on Elena's computer explaining to her the reasons of his departure. He tells her to trust her friends until he gets back. Damon, under the control of the Malach and the Kitsune, changes the note so that it now reads that Stefan is leaving for good and that he leaves Damon the responsibility of looking after Elena. Later, Meredith learns that Damon changed the note from a backup file on the computer. Once they learn that Damon changed it they try to figure out why and learn that he was possesed by one of the malach the whole time. Elena then helps Damon remember who he really is by destroying the Malach inside him. When the two confront the Kitsune, Shinichi only agrees to tell them the whereabouts of Stefan's prison if he can take away all Damon's memories of the past time he has spent with Elena. They agree. Only after Shinichi does this does Elena realize why this was such a price to pay. Damon forgets his repentance and the friendship and alliance he has come to have with Elena, Bonnie, Meredith and Matt. The book ends with Damon, Elena, and Matt driving off to find Stefan.
