Main Characters
Elena Gilbert
Novel series
In the books, there are repeated references in the series that state that Elena looks like an angel. She is beautiful, slender and pale, with long blonde hair "a few shades lighter then the sun" and blue eyes "the color of lapis lazuli's". Her parents died when she was younger and she is raised by her Aunt Judith. Over the course of the series, Elena transforms from an 'ice queen' to a more open-minded person. Bonnie comments in Elena's diary when she first died that Elena was far from perfect and while she was never an angel, she died a good person. Elena breaks up with Matt Honeycutt around when school starts, feeling he has become more to her than one of her disposable boyfriends; she loves him like a friend or brother. Elena is good at leading and initiating action but can be overly aggressive. Elena is madly in love with Stefan Salvatore though she does recognize that she also has feelings for Damon, his brother. Stefan initially attempts to ignore Elena. He makes comparisons between her and former vampire girlfriend Katherine, though he realizes that beneath the looks they are very different people. Her school reputation is important to her, so she makes up a fake boyfriend to hide the fact Stefan has rejected her advances. She dies several times, changing from human to vampire (after she gets enough blood from both Salvator brothers, where her killer, Katherine, thought she only got blood from one boy) to spirit (after an unknown power brings her back). In The Return: Nightfall she comes back perfectly normal albeit with supernatural powers intact, making her blood irresistible to all beings. Elena has an incredibly strong romance with Stefan Salvatore, which is the basis of the series, though in the later books she starts to fall for Damon too.

Elena was introduced as a seventeen year-old young woman who lives in Mystic Falls, Virginia. At first, she appears to be melancholy and slightly withdrawn in life. She is the daughter of Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers-Gilbert, and the older sister of Jeremy Gilbert. Her parents were killed in a car crash before the series started. Elena was also in the car with her parents but survived. Since then, she has been coping with their death, with her brother's addiction to drugs and her aunt Jenna's attempts to take care of her and Jeremy. She has the habit to write everything that happens to her in her diary.
When she meets the mysterious Stefan Salvatore, she starts to fall in love with him. However, she soon starts to mistrust him due to his lies and to his past history with his brother Damon. When she learns that Stefan was in Mystic Falls in 1953, she confronts him and learns that he is a century-old vampire and that this is the reason why he is so estranged with Damon, who is also a vampire. After a period of tension between them, Stefan and Elena get back together. Also, despite the fact that she abhors his human-hunter instincts, she develops a tense friendship with Damon himself. And later on in the series, she finds out that Damon is actually in love with her and Stefan tells him that history will not be repeating itself where Elena is concerned.
After some time, Elena discovers several secrets about herself: first, she is the spitting image of Katherine Pierce, the vampire both Salvatore brothers loved and who turned them into vampires; second, Stefan saved her from the car accident that killed her parents; and third, she was adopted by the Gilbert's. Her birth mother is Isobel Flemming-Saltzman and she doesn't know who her father is. She later learns that Damon turned her mother into a vampire at her own request. Also, in a scene of the series where Isobel and Johnathan were talking over the phone, it was known that John Gilbert, who she thought was just her uncle who causes a lot of trouble to their family, is actually her real father. Her brother, Jeremy has decided to turn into a vampire after Anna dies and he doesn't want to feel pain anymore. So he drinks a vile of Anna's(a vampire he falls in love with) blood that she gave him and then takes Elena's pain pills from the car accident. It seemed as though Elena and Damon kissed however it was Katherine who kissed Damon. This was later revealed when "Elena" cut off John's fingers (with the ring that keeps him from dying on it) and stabbed him. Right before she killed John, he realized Katherine was acting as though she is "Elena."

Much of Stefan's personality is influenced by the guilt and self-hatred he feels over his vampiric nature and the circumstances surrounding his "death." Readers have often called him mopey, moody, angsty, and broody. However, while Stefan does have a tendency to blame himself for things, which leads to periods of intense depression, he is also very kind, compassionate, responsible, chivalrous, and brave. He has strong morals and a strict code of ethics, probably influenced by his tutor and Catholic upbringing.
Growing up in Florence, Stefan comes across as reclusive, though his brother does admit he has friends. According to Damon, Stefan spends his time "among books and paintings," and has never had to face reality because of his sheltered life. He seems quite naive, and a bit of a romantic where Katherine (and later Elena) are concerned.
Following Katherine's "suicide" and his transformation into a vampire, Stefan spends the next 500 years consumed with guilt. He refuses to drink human blood, and chooses to live in the shadows. Upon his arrival to Fell's Church, he attempts to blend in with the other students at Robert E. Lee High School. Yet, his reserved nature keeps him from making friends until Matt Honeycutt - the school quarterback - comes along. Matt can sense Stefan is incredibly lonely.
Though Stefan is usually very gentle, he has a bit of a temper (especially whenever his brother Damon is involved). When he gets angry he shows violent tendencies, and can lose control. Damon describes him as selfish, and at times he does seem self-absorbed in his own problems. However, whenever the town or his friends are in danger, Stefan will rush over to try to help. He has a strong sense of duty and loyalty. He has also been shown to be willing to sacrifice himself in order to save the people he cares about.
Finally, Stefan's personality is not all doom and gloom. He displays a wicked sense of humor on several occasions, and when he's around his friends, he relaxes and lets his guard down. Sometimes he even smiles.

Katherine Pierce
Katherine is a young woman with whom both Damon and Stefan Salvatore fell in love in 1864. However, she was revealed to be a vampire with a cold and calculating personality. She had plans to turn both Stefan and Damon into vampires and for the three to spend all eternity together. Her manipulation was one of the reasons that drove the two brothers apart.
Along with her vampire friend Pearl and her witch servant Emily Bennett, Katherine realized that the Founding Families of Mystic Falls knew that vampires were running around the town. However, despite Pearl's constant warnings, Katherine refused to abandon her plans with the Salvatore brothers. When she ingested the vervain in Stefan's blood (that his father had made him drink), she was captured by the townspeople and apparently burned in Fell's Church with Pearl and 25 other vampires.
Back in 2009, Damon tells Stefan that he had made a deal with Emily to cast a spell that would protect Katherine and keep her in a mummified state until he could wake her again. When Bonnie Bennett and her grandmother open the tomb, Katherine isn't in it. Pearl reveals to Damon that Katherine had escaped by compelling the guard that had been keeping them. Anna, Pearl's daughter, tells Damon that Katherine never loved him and that she was no longer interested in him. Isobel had been said to have met Katherine shortly after she was turned. Katherine returns at the end of the season finale and is discovered making out with Damon, who thinks he is kissing Elena. They are caught by Jenna on her front porch, who then orders "Elena" inside. Katherine goes into the kitchen and starts speaking with John Gilbert, who thinks he's talking to Elena. She takes a knife and cuts off the fingers on the hand that his ring is on (which protects him from vampires) and then kills him. Before dying, he recognizes her as Katherine. Elena arrives home and, hearing people in the kitchen, proceeds to walk in, leaving a cliffhanger to be resolved in season 2.

Jenna Sommers (auntTV seriesSeason 1 When Jeremy is introduced he is seen to be a self-destructive, drug using and angry teenager who is infatuated with Elena's ex-boyfriend Matt Donovan's sister Vicki Donovan. It is insinuated that the pair (Jeremy and Vicki) had a sexual relationship after the death of his parents during the summer and while he still holds feelings for her, she is interested in Tyler Lockwood, the son of the towns Mayor. However, after Vicki's death in episode 1x07 Jeremy is left devastated. His memory of Vicki's death and vampire status was erased by Damon Salvatore on Elena's insistence, though he still feels the loss when Vicki is reported as missing.
Afterwards, Jeremy becomes more involved in his studies, and while researching for a paper in the school library he meets a girl named Anna, who tells him about his ancestor's fascination with Vampires that influenced the town back around the time of the Civil War, beginning his fascination with them. Believing them to be fictional creatures at first, Anna inadvertently reveals her true identity to him when she attacks him in the woods in Order to use him to free her mother and the other vampires from the tomb. While his knowledge isn't apparent at first, once he puts all the pieces together he confronts Anna and asks her to 'turn him'. However she refuses, but begins warming up to the idea only to discover that he only wanted to become a vampire to be with Vicki, whom he believed to be a vampire until her body was discovered by Caroline Forbes.
After a brief falling out, the pair begin a actual relationship a few episodes later with Anna calling Jeremy her "weakness". In the penultimate episode of Season 1, Jeremy is abducted by Elena's birth mother Isobel, a fellow vampire, along with his uncle John Gilbert. However, he is released by Isobel upon Elena promising to swap a devise in return for Jeremy's safety. Accompanying this is Jeremy's discovery that Elena was present at Vicki's death and had his mind wiped of the event, which he finds out more about in detail by reading Elena's diary. After Anna's parents are killed, Anna comes to him with a vial of her blood and says that if he dies with it in his system, he will begin the process of turning into a vampire. Initially refusing, he changes his mind after Anna is murdered by his uncle John after the council organizes a sting operation to take down all of the tomb vampires. His final scenes of the episode involve him drinking Anna's blood and injesting the remainder of Elena's painkillers from her car accident.

Bonnie Bennett
Bonnie is Elena's best friend. She finds out that she is a very powerful witch, just like her grandmother, and is also a descendant of Emily (Katherine's witch servant, who entombed them under the church). Together, Bonnie and her grandmother lift Emily's spell from the tomb, releasing the 25 vampires. When her grandmother dies after from the strain of doing so, Bonnie leaves town. When she returns, she is distant with Elena. It is later revealed that this is because she blames Stefan and Damon for the death of her grandmother. Although from then on she develops a hatred for vampires, she uses a spell to save Stefan and Damon from a burning building knowing that if they died Elena would be heartbroken. She later warns Stefan that if Damon spills one more drop of innocent blood, she will kill him and Stefan too if he gets in her way.
Caroline Forbes
Caroline is a friend of Elena's and Bonnie's. She starts off being quite superficial and self centred. She initally falls for Damon under compulsion but is freed by Elena and Stefan when he attempts to kill her. She begins dating Matt Donovan, Elena's ex boyfriend, although she struggles with jealousy of Elena and Matt's history because Matt is still not over Elena. Over time, Caroline has learned to be more accepting and a kinder person. She is very loyal to her friends and often encourages Elena. She has supported Bonnie through the death of her Grams and tried to mend Matt & Tyler's friendship. Caroline is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
Matt Donovan
Currently Caroline's boyfriend. Elena's ex-boyfriend.
Tyler Lockwood
Tyler is a friend of Matt's and a rival of Jeremy's. He used to date Vicki before she was killed. It has not yet been made clear whether he is human, as he was affected by "the Device". EMTs arrive to revive him but upon looking in his eyes are startled to find them a golden yellow because hes a werewolf.
Alaric Saltzman
Alaric is the history teacher at Mystic Falls High. Over time it is revealed that his wife's name was Isobel, the same as Elena's birth mother, and that she spent most of her time studying paranormal activities. She is presumed dead but Alaric learns from Damon that she has in fact been turned into a vampire by him after being sent by John Gilbert. He helps the Salvatore brothers on several occaisions after it is revealed that the ring Isobel gave him before she disappeared protects him from vampires.

After turning up at a Halloween party (dressed as a vampire) she loses control and attacks Elena, forcing Stefan to stake her. Later, her reamins are found in the woods by Caroline.
